Ying and Grace Kai and the Movement That Changed the World
It was October 2015 and I had never heard of Ying and Grace Kai or the Training for Trainers (T4T) disciple-making model that they started. So, how did I get in a situation where I was being asked to teach T4T at a pastors’ conference in Rwanda in a couple of days, especially since I knew absolutely nothing about it?
My life was changed while flying to Africa!
This person who asked me to teach on T4T handed me a book called “T4T – A Discipleship Re-Revolution” by Ying Kai and Steve Smith. He did this while we were already on our flight to Rwanda. I began to read it while we were flying through the night on our way to Africa and to my surprise, what I discovered changed my life forever!
We were crying out for our city!
As I read Ying and Grace Kai’s story, I was impressed to learn that they had been crying out to the Lord just as I was for a way to reach our city for Christ. I was startled, however, at the simplicity of the answer they received from God but also by the profound effect this strategy had on their ability to reach the lost with the message of the Gospel.
How everything began to change.
The Lord directed Ying and Grace back to the Great Commission, Matthew 28: 19 – 20. As they realized the practices, they were using to grow the Church were opposite of those Jesus taught, they began to change their ministry model and everything began to change.
Over 150,000 home groups were planted!
After changing their approach, in just two years Ying’s and Grace’s team planted over 3,535 home groups. The third year they added over 6,000 more, and over 9 years the number of home groups grew to over 150,000 and they baptized over 1.7 million people!
We saw incredible growth.
After I stepped off the plane in Rwanda, what I heard and saw changed my perspective on discipleship forever. On the ride to the hotel in Kayonza I asked the For His Glory Ministries Africa Director, “How many T4T discipleship trainers did you train back in August when T4T was first introduced here?” He told me that they had trained only 165. I asked him, “How many disciple makers do you have now?” He told me, “2,500!” That blew me away! “You mean you grew from 165 discipleship trainers to 2,500 from August to October? That’s incredible!” I was shocked and convinced that T4T is special.
Rediscovering Jesus’ strategy for multiplying His Church!
We are honored that the Lord used Ying and Grace to introduce us to T4T so that we can share it in Africa. I am also glad that Rob Welch, the founder of For His Glory Ministries, was inspired to combine large evangelistic events, which create unity among the churches in a city, with the T4T discipleship model. This new strategy has greatly accelerated the disciple-making process that is transforming cities and nations for Christ.
Over 1 million people in T4T Groups!
Since 2015, we have seen tremendous growth in God’s Kingdom through For His Glory’s ministry as over 1.8 million people have come to Christ through T4T and over 1 million people are currently in over 115,000 Training for Trainers (T4T) discipleship groups in Africa!
